How to retrieve unread mails using IMAP c client feeds -

Only unread mail from a specific person with email address using IPAp C client APIs, person@gmail.com Is there any way to get it?
I know that this can be done using mail_search (unseen flag), but I think it would be more expensive to ask each time. Please suggest a better way to do this.

If possible, please post a sample program.
