Google Gears for a Social Network? -

I have just seen that new WordPress (last time I used WordPress 5-6 years ago and today) Google Gears Using it, it really feels good but I do not believe 100% how do they use it? I am working on a social network site in PHP (Facebook, MySpace), can you think anything on that site where gear can benefit the user?
